Singapore AutoCAD Evaluation and Training
Brief
A drafting applicant brings to his interview some paper copies of plans. They might present well, but are the drawings accurate? How long did it take to produce the drawings? Does the applicant understand what he is drawing? And the vital question: did the applicant actually draw these drawings, or did someone else?
As a company executive, you know exactly what you want to see in a final product. The essential questions are: how long did it take, and how many mistakes were made, and how much money was paid to produce an accurate end product?
About Paul Barrett
Paul Barrett owns and operates a consultancy business in Joondalup, Western Australia. He formed Dovetail Drafting in July 1998.
Dovetail Specializes in two major disciplines of Drafting; Architectural and Structural. We offer complete packages when it comes to Development Applications (DA) and Building License Applications by providing the client with Full Working Drawings which include Architectural Drawings, Structural Detail Drawings, Specifications, and Energy Accreditation. We offer clients the additional external services of having our drawings Certified by a Structural Engineer, Assessed by an Accredited Energy Assessor, Site Survey, and Estimation/ Quantity Surveying services.
More recently, Paul has been asked to evaluate and train foreign draftspersons in both Singapore and Malaysia, and to improve the CAD skills up to an Australian quality.
External Consultant to Evaluate Applications
Paul believes that his skill would be invaluable to a large corporation who employs drafting staff in any capacity (full time, part time or on contract); to evaluate the applicant’s skill level, drafting knowledge and CAD (Computer Aided Design) knowledge and accuracy. The philosophy within Paul’s own company states that if a draftsperson is not accurate on CAD or does not know what they are drawing, they might as well not being using a computer, and not waste Paul’s time.
Proposed Evaluation Process
Company provides Paul Barrett with shortlist of applicants.
Day 1: Meet candidates. Receive paper and electronic copies of work from each applicant. Applicants leave; Paul spends the day reviewing their work.
Days 2,3,4: Sit down in group or class setting, and work with each individual applicant to observe how they draw, and to educate them on alternative/ more accurate methods of drawing. Assess how long and how accurate a set task takes to draw.
Document each applicant’s progress.
Day 5: Compile reports on each applicant; Present written reports to company executives.
Australasian Consultation
The initial expectation was to provide these training and assessment services in Singapore and Malaysia, as Paul has visited both countries and found the drafting standard to be considerably better than that coming from India and Pakistan, however not up to the level set by Australian draftspersons. The skill displayed by Australian draftspersons is so widely recognized, that employment is gainfully achieved in the United Kingdom, UAE and various European countries. Australia is now experiencing an extreme shortage of draftspersons, due to employment opportunities overseas and our vast resources boom.
Consultancy Cost
Paul has developed a spreadsheet that calculates his required fee structure for evaluation training in Singapore.
Fees payable based on the above 5 day senario, including travel and accommodation to Singapore, would be approx. S$1819 (S$324 per student per day) for a group of 6; obviously, this cost per student is reduced with larger groups - ie. The fee payable per student would be S$1059 (S$212 per student per day) for a group of 12. Obviously, this money is a small cost when considering that the student being assessed may cost the company $1000’s in lost revenue, resources, and lost time.
Alternative Daily Consultancy Fee: (Minimum 5 days)
Singapore: S$2000
Malaysia: RM4920
China: CNY9500
